The way to avoid this happening to you is don't be close to the fireworks when it fires. Yes this frustrates me. Each year there are injuries and deaths particularly in the USA from fireworks. They almost without exception occur for 5 reasons. 1 - Too close to the fireworks when it fires 2 - The firework falls over because it is not properly positioned and secured before it is fired including mortars in racks.
3 - The Shooter is holding on to the firework.
4 - The firework does not fire right away and the shooter goes back to look at the firework to see what happened and often looks right down the loaded tube.
5 - an accidental ignition from an electric match. Often it is because the ematch is installed in the firework before it is in its firing position and the ematch initiates while the firework is being handled. (This would be my guess as to what happened on Ocean City Maryland) Or the ematch ignites while it is being installed or removed from a firework and the installer has a body part over the tube or mortar and gets shot.
Think about it you add a pair of safety glasses and hearing protection and don't do these 5 things you have eliminated almost all the chances of harming yourself shooting fireworks.

It may seem a bit morbid, or even callous, but I always wish that there was more info about what actually happened. There was just also a news thing about a young NHL goalie dying after a mortar incident. His involved a hot tub??? The loss of life is always sad, but are the fireworks being blamed, instead of another "product(s)" that shouldn't be mixed with fireworks?

I am also curious as to the cause of fireworks accidents. I have looked into fireworks accidents for many years and that is how I arrived at the causes of fireworks accidents listed in my post above. You will often find that if you look up the accident a year or more afterwards there will be an investigation report by some agency investigating the accident. For instance there was an accident in Roswell New Mexico where one firefighter was killed and several injured. About a year later there was a report from the state fire marshal stating that they were installing ematches in the fireworks inside a building prior to the fireworks show. It is important to know the causes of fireworks accidents so you can avoid doing those things that cause them
