I am posting this link so everybody knows that you are not supposed to remove Ematch Shrouds.

The number one cause of accidental ignitions of manufactured Display Fireworks is Ematches.
You increase the probability an accidental ignition for a number of reasons when you remove the shroud.
1 - Increases the chance of transference of a static charge (spark) that can ignite the Ematch and firework.
2 - Increases the chance of impact or friction igniting the Ematch and firework.
3 - There is evidence that indicates the contact of the Ematch with black powder of the blackmatch can sensitize the Ematch making an ignition more possible.
There have been many deaths and injuries caused over the years by Ematches so the guy that taught you the first thing you do with an Ematch is pull back or remove the shroud to expose the head of the Ematch was WRONG.
For you guys that are going to say my crew and I have been doing this forever and never had a problem - It was exactly the same for all the people that died when the Ematch ignited the firework - So not a valid argument against this Safety Alert.
For you guys that are going to say an Ematch ignites more reliably when you remove the shroud you are wrong.
If the argument is that it is faster and easier to install an Ematch when you remove the shroud that is not a very good excuse to expose people to injury and death. Get your head out of the sand and find another way. It is not that hard.No one in my company ever removes the shroud. I have pushed this point at every course that I attended when the ERD was teaching them and I push the same point whenever I teach the course.
In addition (not in the safety alert) do not install the Ematch in the lift of a shell or on a quickmatch leader that is shorter than the mortar. If you do this you are not following the Display Fireworks Manual because Ematches are to be installed in the shell only after it is loaded in the mortar.
When installing an Ematch do not get any part of your head or body over the muzzle of the mortar. Remember the gun is loaded.
Lets bring and end to the injuries caused by this dangerous practice and get behind this safety alert and teach people to be safe.
