I have often thought about getting into the industry in some way. Either as a retailer, or getting certified to do display work, there is quite an appeal to me. One of the biggest concerns that has kept me from pursuing a professional approach to fireworks is the commitment to times like May 24 and Canada Day.
With most places being very restrictive about when and where you can light fireworks, how do you professional guys find time to spend time with family and/or set off fireworks just for you?

Your better half has to be into it, my wife is an accountant and loves working on shows with me, it’s an escape from the everyday for her
We celebrate those weekends and more together.
Retailing fireworks is getting difficult especially when you have the big boys discounting so much. Unless your moving massive volumes your only breaking even.

Have to agree with Aussie . If the wife / family are involved then it is more fun to shoot the shows . Usually with us the wife will plan some of the show and in return we will add something that she loves to see . Ie hearts or different shapes . She knows that if she is involved with me on a show then it is dedicated to her .

For me, as a "sub-contractor", I only work a few shows a year. It is simply a given that on Canada day, I will not be home, so the wife and kids make their own plans. It is basically treated like any other hobby - no different than "I'm going fishing for the day"
We do also plan 1-2 events a year that are ours, such as our winter fun day (big tobogganing party we host in Feb/mar) and the odd other time where we will go out and get some 1.4g product to enjoy ourselves. As well, If there is a fireworks show within reasonable driving distance, we will ussually load up the car and go as spectators as a family. We also make a point of attending at least 1 of the globalfest shows in Calgary each year.

I my case. The wife is not a big fan of the whole not being around on the holidays now more then ever with the new little one. But I try to plan ahead and there are already so many time I am not able to do shows with working 12/hour shifts so it comes down to talking with the wife and finding out what is going on that weekend or that day and if I need to be there, most of the time she is good but when the boy gets a little older that may change... like Pyrot said, its a hobby (maybe more of a addiction) For the most part any money I am able to make helping out or doing shows goes into a Labor day show I do just for family\friends.

Always a tough balance. Open communication is so massive. My wife is amazing knowing this is a passion of mine. A nice gift always helps too. Hahahahaha

LOLOLOL!!!!!! Definitely an addiction!!! Pick and choose what shows you can do though, always do a family show for the neighborhood (family, friends and who ever else is wandering by). This Canada day will be epic

A nice gift always helps too. Hahahahaha I tried that one year . Maybe me giving her a box of fireworks wasn't the right gift . Of course I was hoping she might share .

This is the one thing that seeming a lot of people don't think of or maybe thinks its not such a big deal (which is why a good open conversation is a good idea) and all jokes aside, a 'hobbie / job' doing this really does take you away from family on days were its all about family, and even those who are single still are missing out time spent with friends / family. I work every other weekend with 12shifts and on a regular bases I know what that is all about, add in there pyro and I do have to try really hard to keep a good balance, if the wife says, nope, then its no if 'we' made arrangements to have people over or go some where that has to come first, I can deal with the addiction.
