I would like to use 2 inch shells since they are a reasonable price rather than a cake. i understand wiring 50 shells is far more work than wiring 1 cake, but would the pay off be worth it for 50 2 inch shells or would a 40mm cake be just as good? p.s. this makes sense in my head hopefully it comes across properly

I am not a trained professional, but in my opinion, 50 individual mortar shots safely wired with a decent remote system will blow away any consumer grade cake that is legally available in Canada. It will cost you at least $150 - $200 plus talons, (vs. $75 - $100 for 2 or 3 cakes) but WOW! Bigger. Louder. Variety.
That's why the pros do it. (I think)

With the extra cost of 50 igniters vs the cost of a cake I don't really think it's cheaper. Igniters are $1 each, or more, unless you're importing your own.
I'd only compare 1.3 cakes to 1.3 shells since there at least the same family.
1.3 cakes are much harder hitting and larger/louder (even the cheapest ones) when compared to a 1.4 consumer grade product.
Cakes are faster and more intense, in an easy to setup package. So higher $/minute, but much easier. Shells can make the show last longer since you control the timing. This is mostly why the shows I've worked have used shells. However there's always a million reasons for this or that. Especially if there's any actual design with being done with the show.

I hope you have an import permit for those ERD authorized ematches Yes Aussie, you need to apply for an import permit to bring any controlled substance into the country. Choosing previously authorized product is definitely less expensive, otherwise you need to pay to have the device authorized through testing at the ERD. Last I checked, I think it was around $5k per article for testing. But it's been a while since I looked into it. There are producers you can buy from in the USA (MJG, although I assume they're actually manufacturing overseas. Now I'm curious.) that have product with authorizations, but again you still need the permit. The export laws in the USA are tricky too. The company has to hold proper certification for letting the ematch leave the country. But even if you wade through all that you need a magazine and such as well to store the quantities you'd need to be buying for the import option to be cheaper. So it's not really a viable option unless you're a fairly big shooter. For now I'd just stick with getting them from the existing 1.3 distributors.

It’s definitely cheaper to go the MJG route than trying to authorize something
Mystical has them to, but again you’d need storage or an auth to purchase
Hope someone has NYE shows to use them on

In answer to the where are MJG igniters made question, I spoke with the owner of MJG a number of years ago and he said they had moved their production to Mexico.

MJG has already indicated they have supply chain issues. Hopefully it is minimal and everyone gets their ematches.
