London is looking at updating their fireworks bylaws getinvolved.london.ca/fireworks They are considering two different options, one that would allow consumer fireworks to be sold & launched in London and one that would ban consumer fireworks in London. You can vote in the link provided for which option you would want (need to create an account though). I really hope they don't base their decision on the poll as there are only 900 responses and over 400k people in London and I am sure most people would not want fireworks banned.

I noticed that 67% want consumer fireworks banned. Not a surprise.

The sad thing is that most of Londoners don't want them banned. The activists know where the look to answer the poll. I'm supposed to be on a list to be updated about the status of the procedure, and I just found the poll late last week. (I finally rec'd an email on the 13th) I was actually signed into the forum this morning specifically to post about this.
The public meeting with the Community and Protective Services Committee is on August the 15th. The fireworks topic is slated to be no earlier than 4:05pm. I'm taking a holiday day from work to be there. It is posted in the Get Involved London site, and nowhere else that I have found. The news has said that there is to be a meeting, but has said nothing specific that I have heard. Call me a pessimist but, from what I have seen, the media people want them banned so they have no reason to tell the usual silent majority where to protest. Funny to remember that The London Free Press was in the past, the major sponsor of the downtown Canada Day fireworks.
If numbers matter... The percentage of Londoners that have voted in the change.org petition (for or against) - .6% The percentage of Londoners that have answered the poll (for or against - .2% The percentage of Londoners answering the poll that want fireworks banned - .15% The percentage of Londoners that wildly applauded my finale on Canada Day - greater than .07% There were well over 200 people gathered before I lit the first fuse, and many more came over to watch, plus all of my extended neighbours that watch from their back decks or front porches. My little event garners half the support of the "ban them" numbers for the whole city. There were thousands of Londoners gathered to watch the Summerside Community fireworks on June 30th (could barely find a parking spot), and more downtown to watch the Canada Day Fireworks.
Bit of info... The report that the city administration prepared for the councilors and the committee was prepared and presented by a fireman. Nothing against fireman in general, but it is well known they want private use banned and every one of them are licensed pyrotechnicians that would stand to make more money if they put on neighbourhood Canada Day and Victoria Day shows. I know most of you are licensed, but it is your business. For them it's extra cash.
I know. I'm preaching to the choir, but I need to vent sometimes, and I know that you all agree that they shouldn't be banned:) .

Actually it’s the opposite with Fire Departments
As time goes on more and more are backing away from the public’s displays, every city wants the liability off their books
Trust me, I’m a fire fighter, cities are pushing harder and harder to get it out of their wheelhouse
As for the gentleman who’s putting these forward he might be the poor bastard answering the phone when the phone rings with complaints on the other end
In these situations the public is giving the cities ammunition when they shoot them at 2am or outside of regular holidays
Even the environmental data doesn’t match what reporters are claiming and the industry is working on this as we speak.
After dealing with 32 shows on Canada day weekend and dealing with 32 sponsors asking for reasons not to cancel during the Smokey days, the resistance is becoming louder and louder, but we March on
If we use our toys the right way at the right time maybe we get to keep them
Piss off the neighbours enough and complaint ensue,
We also need to be louder ourselves when it comes to this assault on our endevours
It would seem that nobody cares enough to do the poll or didn’t see it.

Upate...
Yesterday Bob's fireworks in London sent out an email blast to announce on-line ordering for Labour Day. The Leff family has been at it for over 50 years here and have a huge mailing list. Bob always treats you like you are his best customer, even if you only have $100 to spend. In their blast they noted the by-law poll at Get Involved London and asked people to have their say.
The poll is now at 53% in favour of keeping fireworks. That's up 20%.
This is the most encouraging fireworks news I've seen or reported in London in 2 or 3 years.
Fingers crossed!

Another thank you... Yesterday Powerhouse Fireworks sent out an e-mail blast asking for help on the poll. Jason also has a huge customer list. He has run a very large location in London for many years. They also included a list of city counselors and contact info. We have slipped to 52% for - 48% against. London needs every keep fireworks vote.
Thanks Jason and your Powerhouse team.

You guys are going to get sick of me and my updates.
I just sent an e-mail to my ward counselor letting him know... On July 28th Bob's Fireworks sent out their e-mail blast. The Get Involved London poll swung from 33%pro/67%anti to 53%pro/47%anti. On July 31st Powerhouse Fireworks sent out their blast to vote and included the list of counselors and contact info.
On Aug. 1st, at 9:37am, the poll was closed. In the section of Get Involved London's site where they talk about being open and inclusive, they don't happen to mention that they might close a poll 2 weeks before the committee meeting. This seems a bit fishy to me.
If you live in London, please contact your ward counselor.

I went through the introduction of a fireworks bylaw in Winnipeg in 2004. The idea to control fireworks usually comes from the administration of the fire department. They have contact with the NFPA which is a USA organization that has standards for fire safety used by Canadian fire departments. The NFPA has a stated goal of eliminating consumer fireworks and they push this idea to all the fire departments that they are in contact with. It is likely that members of the fire department administration will be at the committee meeting. Be aware that the fire department administration is more familiar than you with meeting procedure so educate yourself on this before going into the meeting. Be careful that you say nothing in the meeting that the fire department administration can use against your argument. Remember that for many of the councillors that their experience with fireworks is having people complaining to them about fireworks. All the people who just enjoyed a great fireworks show are not phoning their councillor to tell them how great it was. Convincing the councillors that there are many more people that enjoy fireworks than those that do not like them is probably your most effective strategy. You might ask at the meeting why there are not similar laws being considered to control candles Search deaths and injuries for fireworks and candles for the info below from the Federal government. It is easy to see that candles cause more fires and injuries than fireworks and do not kill 8 people a year in Canada. It might also be useful to find out how many injuries and fires the London fire department has attended. It is likely anywhere from none to a few. At the time of the 2004 bylaw that I dealt with there were no reported injuries and 1 small fire caused by a guy in a very small backyard shooting a firework that hit the old wooden soffits on his house. The house sustained no significant damage. I hope this info from my experience helps. If you have not done so yet you should contact the CNFA to see what they are doing about the London bylaw. www.nationalfireworks.ca/Canada-wide statistics for candle fires are not available. However, based on data from Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and B.C., it is estimated that candles were responsible for an average of nearly 800 candle fires in Canada each year between 1999 and 2008, with a yearly average of 8 fire deaths, 115 fire injuries and $26.2 million in property damage. How many cases were there? Between April 1, 2011 and April 13, 2023, there were 210 reported cases of injuries related to fireworks and other similar products, representing 11 cases per 100,000 CHIRPP records.

Thanks for the info and advice Bigtop. To the best of my knowledge the CNFA has been keeping an eye on this. I have been to a public input meeting before and the counselors were more interested in parliamentary procedure than hearing from the public. even though they had just spent 3 hours bemoaning the fact that so few people were in attendance to express their views. They didn't like it much when after being rudely cut off I loudly called them a bunch of format following moronic ..."s. I'm sure it didn't help my cause, but it sure felt good, and I could easily tell that at least one counselor agreed with me.
I will definitely be consulting with my ward counselor on procedure for this meeting.

You can see the agenda for the meeting here pub-london.escribemeetings.com/Meeting.aspx?Id=24ceb707-f2e2-4334-bcae-69dfaab2030f&Agenda=Agenda&lang=EnglishIt is disheartening to see all the letters people have sent in wanting a ban on consumer and some people even are requesting an outright ban on everything. I have also found a live stream link www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEAsjXw1zyo for when the meeting happens so I can watch it as I can't attend. I also find it incredibly annoying how under announced this whole thing has been, no one knows about this, there have been nothing in the newspapers or on the radio so everyone is going to find out about it after the ban happens. I think the real issue is that we need enforcement of the actual current bylaws since an outright ban is not going to stop people from setting off fireworks. Yeah it might reduce the overall amount but people are still going to light them off regardless. -Darke(a sad and disheartened Londoner)

I am now listed as a presenter at the meeting. I thought that I already was, but my ward counselor informed me that I wasn't on the list. I make #30 if everyone listed shows up. Each speaker is allowed 5 minutes. There is no rebuttal, no discussion, and no clarification of points. You have to be very concise, and that can be hard for the untrained. I have pointed out that this is not a very good way of involving the public. According to the city's website, anyone that shows up at the meeting can speak, but I doubt that will be allowed if all of the listed people show. The system is also really designed for regular city hall followers to know where to go to get involved. I've learned a lot. I have a lot of editing to do with only 5 minutes. I had kind of planned to read my entire 6 pages slowly like a filibuster. I have read all of the letters that have been included, and although is seems like a lot, when you compare the numbers it is still a very small percentage of Londoners that want fireworks banned. The letter from Victor at K&H has some fantastic statistics in it. Many people complain about fireworks being set off 10 days before Victoria Day or Canada Day, and then for nights afterwards, and then every weekend all summer. I don't know how to politely call them exaggerators or liars. When I tell people about this particular complaint they look at me like I'm making it up. (I'm glad it can now be seen in writing) No one can explain how changing the sales day limits will fix this complaint. I pointed out to my counselor about eliminating the Canada Day rain date would force consumers to store fireworks in their homes for close to a year. You could see the light bulbs going on as he realized how the fire department wouldn't like that very much. My counselor also didn't realize until I pointed it out that the proposals didn't allow for proper options. It did not allow for doing nothing or as some have proposed, a total ban. It really is bias designed to result in a ban of "back yard fireworks". The London Free Press just did an article on the proposed By-law options. They noted that 52% were in favour of keeping backyard consumer fireworks. I learned that somewhere in the city's information it does say that the poll on Get Involved London was to go only for 2 weeks from July 15th to August 1st, although this information was not readily available to the public. I would assume that Bob's and Powerhouse learned of this and promptly sent out their blasts. I'm hoping that the CNFA guy makes it so that I have a wing man. That's it for today

Good morning all. After meeting update time.
The meeting was very well attended and the public input time went over 3 hours. My input comes at 3:24 in on the Youtube feed. The Hindu group forced overflow into 2 meeting rooms away from the chambers gallery. At first I was miffed to be stuffed into the last room, but it became a benefit as I sat quietly at the back absorbing ideas as I listened and observed. Many from the Hindu community spoke very well and they also had 2 psychologists to argue against the ill affects to people suffering mental illness. The anti-fireworks group was generally rude and disrespectful to anyone opposed to them. You are not allowed to clap, boo, cheer, etc. They walked up beside people that were speaking and held up protest signs, shook their heads to deny facts, held their hands up to do silent clapping, nodded in agreement to non-factual statements as if it makes them more true, and worst of all, the guy sitting right in front of me made a quiet racial slur to one of his group. It was very awkward feeling for me being one of the few white males in attendance. The (lack of better descriptor) "brown" people (don't want to assume that they were all Hindi) thought I was against them and wouldn't really look at me, and then once the white crowd saw me actively approach a group of "brown" people during the break to let them know how much I appreciated their attendance, just looked at me with disgust. After I had said my spiel, and they definitely knew who I was, a tall well dressed woman who gave a very impassioned presentation shuffled past me and others from K&H and Bob's mumbling "shame, shame, shame". I stayed quiet and respectful all night, but that took me by surprise and I burst out laughing at her. I had to work very hard to quickly shut it down. She had spoken so much about kindness and compassion. Her true colours came out. One councilor, I will name him, Sam Trosow, was there and running around making sure that he had anti fireworks people in every room. During the break he was coaching speakers on changing their points to better attack the points of the Hindi group. I am going to see if I can lodge a complaint about his activities last night. It was for our input, not his. They are now trying to push that dollar store sparklers are all that is required for Dwali. In the end it was voted in favour of keeping "backyard" fireworks under option A, with a small Dwali edit, and sending that recommendation to council. Of course the tall woman mumbled unbelievable over and over and mumbled about being ashamed of themselves.
Now we wait to see what full council decides.
I pointed out to Micheal Leff afterwards that they should ask that if the bylaw is to be changed to ban backyard fireworks that it not go into effect until after July 1, 2024. They are talking about a timeline for the first quarter of 2024. When I asked him when he has to start placing his orders for annual inventory he quickly realized that they might get stuck with a bunch of inventory that they can't legally sell. I will pose the same idea to my councilor.
Picked up some Wendy's and went to bed.
Thanks for your encouragement and support.

I find it so frustrating to hear how blatant the ‘if you’re not with me, you’re against me’ mentality of people these days. Going into a meeting like that, people are supposed to hear both side of a story so that everyone can better UNDERSTAND how something like this impacts everyone. When there is a clear agenda that a small group of people are trying to push without even wanting to listen to anyone but themselves, this is when my blood boils. Keep up the fight and if there’s anything I can help with please reach out to me.

Their poorly designed banners looked like a 6 year old made them
I’d like to see their statistics on the pollution production of a backyard fireworks display vs the other polluters in our world.
They can’t provide them as it doesn’t corroborate their hatred for them
Hate to be the bearer of bad news society EVERYTHING POLLUTES,
Fireworks are a blip compared to the monoxide produced by your furnace, car, fireplace
Give your head a shake society, you’ve got bigger issues to deal with

Thanks for the morning laugh Aussie.
My boss and co-workers were watching on line and they kept texting me asking what the signs said. The one was just a red blob. It was supposed to be her dog curled up and shaking.
I had to edit my pollution points out due to time. I was going to end them with asking why "we don't just ban gas furnaces as well? Oh. because we'd all freeze to death!"
Yes the hatred was strong in the rooms. As I said to one of my co-workers yesterday, I felt very ashamed of being white the other night. The racism was as strong as the lies, mistruths, exaggerating, and general ignorance. To clarify... every anti fireworks person was white. I also thought that that was weird. Are we genetically more prone to trauma?

One of the pro fireworks speakers talked about air pollution. They said when looking at the data for air pollution in London there was absolutely no change in air quality around the times fireworks were used. They also checked the rest of the year and the air quality was also the same. They noted the times during the day the only times the air quality changed was when people drove to work in the morning and then drove back home after work.
I find this interesting and agree that it makes sense.

London City council voted 10-5 to draft an updated fireworks bylaw that will keep backyard fireworks for Victoria Day and Canada Day, as well as add Dwali (Nov. 12) and Chinese New Year. The sale of fireworks will be cut back to 5 days prior to each event day from 7. The addition of the 2 extra days is also then a very good thing for retailers like Bob's and Powerhouse (K&H). They now have 20 sales days in London instead of 14. The shortened sales periods may also shut down the smaller pop ups that can be the questionable sellers. This is a huge win. Thanks again all for your patience reading my updates and in offering up your advice. Many snippets that I picked up here helped my write my arguments that I presented to the Community and Protective Services Committee. Yep... I'm claiming the win.

So the very vocal minority is winding up for another round. The city By Laws say that there must be a 2 year pause before the same topic can be presented, once it has been discussed and acted upon by council. The 2 year pause will be up next year and the anti fireworks group has started their newest petition. I have started on of my own. Mine is so far not aimed directly at the anti fireworks group, but at change.org themselves. I have remained a member of the petition group only to stay on top of fireworks petitions but get 4 or 5 petition notices a week, most of them ridiculously demanding that the government do something that they simply can't do. Many are filled with claims that simply aren't true, and if you care enough to fact check that is easily proven. It's very frustrating! I have also seen that if you are not part of an activist community, word of your petition goes nowhere. This latest re-start by London's anti fireworks group inspired me to push back at change.org themselves. I have started a petition to try to push change.org to create a counter sign option in all their petitions. If this happens people could actively disagree and within the petition comment on why they disagree. This would create a better view of how the general public thinks and feels about any petitioned topic. I would also hope that petition creators would think twice and do actual research before they create a petition. Yes it would be more of a survey, but what good is half the information? Here is a link to my petition: www.change.org/search?q=introduce%20a%20countersign&offset=0I created this petition using the site's AI system. It was too easy because of the AI and I had to edit a fair amount to remove untruths. I am no genius. In fact spell check had to point out that I just spelled genius wrong. It showed me that once I decided to speak up it was actually too easy to do so. Please check out my petition and sign it if you agree. It is not about London Ontario, it is a global petition. Once I have enough signatures I can have it "promoted" and make it more visible. Oh, I will be creating another petition to fight the new anti fireworks group sometime soon. They are trying to have London revert back to Victoria Day and Canada Day only, or just ban them.

I just re-visited the newest petition to ban or restrict fireworks in London and noticed that they did not reference Canada Day. They referred to Victoria day and Labour Day as the traditional fireworks event days. This shows that the either simply copied someone's petition or had AI generate theirs. Just sayin...
