So this year I am planning on doing some of these angled boards for some multi-cakes and mortars that I am shooting off together to fill the sky more on Canada Day. Should look really good. But Instead of what looks to be 2x4's I am just going to use 2x2 for a smaller angle. Anyone else tried this before?

Yes We have tried that . For mortars we use plywood then attach some pegboard to that at a 90 Degree angle so like this __!__ Then use zip ties to attach the mortars to the pegboard . For cakes we use plywood with zip ties . Put two or three zip ties around the cake tighten then drill a few holes in the plywood put zip ties through the holes into the zip ties that surround the cake . Zip ties can handle the force exerted on them and clean up is a breeze . Just cut the zip ties when one is done with the show . We add a 2x4 under the cakes that we want angled out or if we are shooting mortars we can put them on any angle with the pegboard .

Nice Grisom, got to try that. I am actually making some racks for mines and comets since the weather is crap today might as well make something. Can't wait till some warm weather to shot my Canada Day Fireworks . I will post some pics when done.

Guess I have a knack for reviving old threads! I’m firing in a field about 70 feet wide. I want to shoot 3 identical cakes at the same time with one firing straight up and the other two firing off at an angle on each side. So it would look something like this... \ | / (each line represents a shot path). Couple of questions: 1. What angles should I use for vertical cakes to maximize my sky coverage assuming that I fire from the center of the field. 2. And would the angles still work if I were to fire off 3 CDC9494 fanned cakes (which seems to fan out less compared to other fanned cakes like The Proud)? Past couple of shows I have tried to just space the cakes out along the field but they still seemed to overlap. Thanks in advance folks!

Hey Smile .
Not knowing what is on the other side of the field . For the vertical cakes - I would recommend 15 degrees off vertical to keep the effects and debris in the field area.
For the fan cakes I wouldn't go more than 10 degrees off vertical .

Thank you Grisom!
Do you know what angles some of the fanned cakes use? Maybe I can use that as a guide as I shot off a whole bunch of fanned cakes last year (so I’ll have a good idea of what would fall within the field’s width and what wouldn’t).
I feel like the mighty might be a good indicator of what I’m trying to replicate with my vertical cakes (three shots going up at the same time) while the proud fanned cake probably filled the sky the best (albeit because it’s breaks are pretty big).

Wow this person’s design is great! It’s 20 degrees though so I might have to scale back a bit! Plus with the fanned cakes at the end I’m not so sure the middle section would work very well... youtu.be/l6Vzh3-LEtI

Hey.
What we tend to do is put our cakes on 3 foot boards and just screw a 2 x 4 underneath one end. That usually will give you the desired angle.
As to what angles the cakes are - not quite sure. I can check and see what cakes I have and find out for you .

Lol that sounds much easier. Sure would love to know what angles some of the cakes fire at. Thanks!

Search clinometer in app store/google play. I haven't yet because I have an old school inclinometer. Sure you will have to buy the cake, but we all will anyway !

I down loaded about a half a dozen different angle measuring apps this morning. The VELUX Roof Pitch app has a nice clean graphic and is pretty responsive. I also haven't been plastered with millions of commercials in between each measurement. The only negative that I have found is that it only seems to work with the phone in landscape, not portrait. Playing with it it is responsive enough that when trying to build something like a simple board with a 2x4 foot, you would be able to slide the 2x4 position and instantly see your actual pitch. Not being able to remember how to do trigonometry, this seems handy. I'm keeping this app.
Can't believe that I actually spelled trigonometry correctly without the computer giving me the red line of stupidity!

Thanks Londonfan!! I’ll give that app a try. Now that I think about it... I think the iPhone has a built in leveler app (it’s paired with the default compass app) I think that should do the trick too! They probably all use the built in accelerometer.
Hahaha the red line of stupidity. While it makes me feel the same way, I can’t say I don’t love it!

I think I have that app on my other phone . Will have to check .
The red line of stupidity- reminds me of when I was in school we had a spelling test . Well my writing wasn't the best at that time so the teacher asked how I spelled a certain word . Well I replied how is it suppose to be spelled ? She spelled it and I said yeah that is what I wrote . She fell for it - I got the mark .

All done! Decided to go with 20 degrees as I felt I could fan out a bit more than 15. Time will tell! The wood I had wasn’t the right height or length so I had to make legs to create the angle. Click on the image to see the final product as the preview cuts it off. (I just modified the boards I built and fired off of last year hence why they’re so gross looking lol)
