I"m not sure where to post this, but here looked good. With the current Halloween giveaway going on, I thought it would be interesting to look at the Victoria BC fireworks bylaw. Fireworks are only allowed in London, Ont. on the Monday of May 24 weekend and on Canada Day. They have recently made provisions for rain dates in London. You can of course apply for a permit for other dates if you are a supervisor and doing a show. Can someone with probably more knowledge than me have a look at Victoria BC's bylaw and confirm what I think it saws? It looks to me that you are only allowed to discharge fireworks around Halloween there. It also looks like you have to be a supervisor and have a permit. (Apparently it used to be a free for all war zone there on Halloween night.) Am I reading this right??? I thought we had it bad in London! Now I'm curious about other very restrictive areas / less restrictive areas and thinking of moving to Ipperwash.(not really ) Tell me what you think.

Even selling fireworks is a whole legal thing. I think in Ontario it's 1 week before the holiday and you have to stop the day of, certain cities allow you to apply for year long permission for selling.
Vancouver
I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion. (from story above)
"But this about more than noise. Fireworks are stupid and dangerous and there's no need for them."
"Capt. Gormick agrees: "I don't know if there is a need for fireworks. It's something that is culturally ingrained in the West Coast around Halloween and what we're doing is recognizing that there's an appetite for them and by banning them, people will find other sources to acquire fireworks and probably from unsafe sources," he said."
I am guessing and please someone from the west coast correct me on this but Pro-Firework displays I would think are few and far between, not as common as one would see any where else for weddings or celebrations (I am just guessing on that)

They are definitely not as common as on the east coast I would say. Here on the west coast it’s more of a Halloween and New Years thing, although you can get permits for pro pyro through out the year, like here in Victoria Buchart gardens puts on a pro pyro show every Saturday night through the summer.

So... aaron1977; you are in Victoria? Am i reading the by-law correctly? Are fireworks only allowed in Victoria for Halloween? Do you require a permit for backyard fireworks, or are only permitted displays put on by pros allowed?

Hi Londonfan, I sure am in Victoria (Langford) You have to get a permit for fireworks even on Halloween from the fire hall that looks after the area you are planning the show. (The dollar amount, location, 1.3 or 1.4 etc.etc.) They will give you a permit for this on Halloween or new years but you have to show proof of a fireworks course (weather it be fireworks supervisor or a course put on by the local firehalls near that time of year) This is required to legally set off both 1.3 and 1.4 during those times, I'm not sure that they would be too inclined to issue you a permit out of these two days unless you are obtaining it under the guidelines of 1.3 and of course with the current dry woods and burning ban I don't think you'd have much luck getting one for 1.3 either until there's some rain!

Hi aaron1977: Thanks for the info, but... To be clear... Does an individual, just wanting to set off a couple of $10-$20 cakes and some $5 single shots in their backyard need a permit? He would not be doing a show, just being a regular guy setting off consumer 1.4 fireworks.

That is correct “by law” you need a permit to light off any 1.4 backyard in Victoria, they are usually only around $10 for the specified hours you ask for.

I probably live in one of the most restrictive area's in Canada, and that would be in central Alberta - more specifically, red Deer county. They have completely banned all 1.4g fireworks, and a permit will only be issued to a display supervisor with proof of insurance for what they call "high hazzard" fireworks, - meaning 1.3g. As well , if it is not a community sposored event, it is very highly un-likely you will get a permit. Funny though, all the surrounding counties have no restrictions on 1.4g - just the Federal regulations. The County even go's so far as to not allow 1.4g product in a "professional" show, so even if you take 1.4g and use quickmatch and or e-match, thus turning it into a 1.3g product, it is still technically not allowed! They also try to find any and every loophole possible to not issue a permit. The last time I applied for one, it was sponsored by our community society, but because we were going to use Crown Land for the shoot site, the fire chief demanded a letter of permission from the Queen herself, before he would issue the permit. Needless to say, that show ended up not happenning !
