This week I purchased a "Mobile Photography Kit" from Best Buy to use while recording my Canada Day fireworks with an iPhone. ($69.95 plus tax)
Phones are a handy camera, convenient to pull out for recording, and for anyone but me they are apparently easy for internet uploads.
My problem is that I always find the shakiness of hand held recording distracting and I really hate the constant movement of the camera to try to catch the the full up/down/left/right view. Something is always missed. I also won't have to distract anyone to actually do it.
This kit comes with a cheesy tripod, a lens clip, a remote, and three lenses. (I almost forgot the stylish carry/storage case!) I really only need the wide angle lens. I have played with it around the house and it seems to do OK for picture distortion, and it looks like the increased view will be good for the height and width of 1.4 stuff. (I can only set up the camera to be about 130 ft. from the set up area.) The remote is termed a shutter remote, but is does start the recording of video so that once you are set, you don't have to touch the phone.
I have already set the phone to record at 720P to maximize storage, and I also feel that that is really all the resolution needed for this kind or thing. (720P is a legitimate HD format as used by ABC, Disney, Sportsnet, etc.) The added benefit is that this setting may also mask some of the edge distortion caused by the wide angle lens.
Am I the first sucker to try this? I haven't seen any postings about this topic.
I would love feedback if anyone has tried this type of lens adapter before.
If I can figure out how, I will try to post my "glorious", "Sky Puke With Style", roughly 3 minute finale this year so that you guys can see how well/poorly it worked.
