If it’s a municipality it’s usually a purchase order
If it’s a wedding or private event it’s full payment on the day
No money no shooty

this is for a resort for a Canada day celebration. I have asked for a 50% down payment and the rest the day of the shoot

I am not a professional shooter, but have spent decades in the retail/service sector. You have costs to incur on the behalf of the customer that you cannot recoup if for any reason there is a bail out on their side. It is pretty much a standard practice in this kind of transaction(outside the Pyro world)to request a deposit. Aussie is correct about municipality events and purchase orders. That kind of transaction can even have 30 day terms after the date of the event, but you have the right to request a deposit at the time of tender for the job. I would definitely negotiate a deposit into the agreement.

I don't think you are "out of line" in requesting/requiring a deposit. Like mentioned above, there are costs, plus time incurred ahead of the show. As well, it will lessen the chance that someone else might just come in and under-cut you. (sad to think of, but it happens!)
