Hello guys! My name's Dave, I'm 29 and I'm from Louiseville in Quebec. I'm very happy to be part of this community I'm new to the world of fireworks and I look forward to learn from you guys. My interest to this started growing this year after I went to a lot of shows. I then decided to get into it more seriously and make my own beginner shows at home on partys, family occasions, etc. I realised that being on the field lighting the fireworks with a lighter was not what I wanted and that it was hard to plan the "show". So I ordered last friday a Cobra 18R Remote (with case), an 18M Module (with case as well) and some Talon Clips. Can't wait for it to arrive here! Again, I'm happy to be here and learn from experienced pyros Peace Dave

Thanks a lot guys! khoganThanks for the info but it won't be this year for me. Next year for sure though Ottawa is about 5 hours from home but it's not a big deal since I like long drive. I guess once I take his course, he will explain the steps to become Certified Pyro, etc? pyroCan't wait to get there One step at a time they say

Taking the course is the first step in becoming a certified pyro. My understanding of the process is you do the course then once complete you can apply to become a display assistant. Once you have sign offs from 3 shows you worked on as an assistant you can become a Display supervisor. I am not sure what else is involved in becoming Display supervisor, like if there is any additional course or tests you need to take first. I am going to do the first course in a couple weeks so I should know more then. You can find more info here: www.nrcan.gc.ca/explosives/fireworks/9885

Just to let you know Dave even if you do the ERD course, it's real hard that a display company will take you in their team. I would recommand you to make sure you got a place that will try you. I bin firing display show since 2010.

Thanks for posting that info jojosfirework. I was afraid of that and that's why I never did the course in the last few years, but figured they are deferentially not going to take me if I don't have a license so figured I may as well go do it. At least taking the course will show that you have some motivation. I guess worst case scenario I am out $150 and get to learn a little more from a seasoned pyro.

Bienvenue Dave,
There are quite a few reputable companies in Quebec you can apprentice under, royal is very heavy into display fireworks, but a very close knit group. GFA is an all around company and very experienced, orion fireworks are a little hidden, but very good guys to work with. BEM, I know they use to do a lot in display, not sure what their workload is now.
In regards to getting your license, just do it. It's one step closer to pursuing the higher end work, and in my case as long as you prove yourself competent. I would bring you on for more shows.

I will call ERD tomorrow regarding the license. I just can't wait to get it and get closer to the next step LumadueMerci beaucoup! You don't have to worry about me if you bring me along, I won't be a burden And if you need, I could bring my COBRA 18M and 18R. It would be my pleasure to make myself useful! exarmyatThanks mate! When I find something I like, I get into it 100%! I just spent 1000$ for Remote Firing Equipment. I should've bought the COBRA 18R2 instead of 18R but, I'll start more simple and go up the ladder after I read A LOT as well on techniques, safety, etc. I really like it! jojosfireworkYou know better than me for sure but I'll get the license anyway. Then I'll wait until I can find a Display Company that will accept me Thanks for the info though! It'll make me work harder to find one

By the way course for 2014 I think they are over. You will need to wait for 2015. For sure license is a must. If you really wish to have more chance to get a spot some where I would recommand you to get even the license of dangereous goods transport. Lumadue recommanded some popular company that they fire multiple shows during St-baptiste or Canada day and driver are hard to find. As for BEM, Bernard will never bring new people in is circle beside if you already recommanded by one of is team. Good Luck
P.M me when you get your license, I personaly hand lighted firework shows till we got are Fireone system believe me remote firing is the best and the safest. Nothing is better to light fireworks and get paid for doing it.

Can't remember how many show'S I did before getting my level 1 sign off. To be honnest did a lot of mortar cleaning or site cleaning before to be able to even load shells or light my first 6 inch shell. I still remember the first time they send me out there with a road flare it was one of my best adrenaline rush. Having my license got me inside sight as cool as the bottom of Niagara Falls firing site.

So, jojo, who have you worked with?
You mentioned Niagara Falls, and I know the person who has that contract for the past 9 years or so.

I was invited by David owner of David Whysall. I thought he was still firing that show. I got to admit David imports great 1.3 shells from MMF. I will be testing Vulcan 1.3 exclusivy distribute by Sirius next week. I'm prety exited since I think they do one of the most powerfull 1.4.
For my past experience my biggest show as shell count was with Bernard (Bem) for St-Baptist Holiday in Ile-Bizard.
2010 Kahnawake Pow wow was one of my longest hand lighted show. Oh forgot to mention doing fireworks show got me back stage with Foreigners, Linard Skynard, Lover Boy, Beach Boys.
best regard's Max

Whysall still does Niagara, the contract went up for bidding this year and he received it yet again.
Do you know if Whysall still uses this "MMF Fireworks"?
Sorry to have derailed your introduction post, dave.

No, at the moment he (DW)fires more Mystical 1.3 , but I'm sure if you see any changing colors shells in is show's then these shell are from MMF. I will be testing some Vulcan 1.3 shell's even Caballer next week and that is pretty exiting since I really believe that Vulcan manufacture one of the strongest 1.4 .

Plans have slightly changed on the date of the course. Instead of October 12th, it'll be on October 11th with GFA in Montreal. Woot!

Awesome Dave! You will have some great fun, you'll see! Having three shows under you belt is not enough I think, you will still be learning after ten shows, take in all the info you can then you could take on a role of supervisor, lots of responsibility.
Congrats man!

Hi! My name is Zach, I'm 22 years old and I've been struggling to pick a career path for years now. One thing that always comes back to my mind is my love and excitement for science, magic, math, illusions and things that go BOOM. Whether it's setting up pyrotechnics for a rock concert or designing a a fire works show for Canada day or planning and executing special effects in a movie (which I assume, are becoming more and more digital, to my dismay), this is a career path I would like to investigate further but I don't know how to proceed! What kind of certification does one require? How much money would all the certifications I need cost? What kind of jobs do said certifications make me eligible for? Are there multiple courses I can take to be considered a more qualified professional in the field? What is job availability like? What are the average earnings of someone in this field? What kind of opportunities are there for travel? What are the qualities of person who succeeds in this industry? (I realise there are answers to some of these questions on www.nrcan.gc.ca/ which I have read. I figured a person in the field would have more answers to my questions) These are only some of my questions and I realize it's already a lot to answer, I would simply appreciate any insight you could give me into how I can pursue this type of career path. I also thank you tremendously for your time taken to read this and hopefully answer. -Zach The above is an e-mail I've been sending to some special effects and pyrotechnic companies to gather some information and seems suitable as an introduction as well for this forum that I joined to further my inquiries. This thread has been a tremendous help in my quest for knowledge so THANK YOU! I'm still having trouble finding out where and when I can take the first step course. If there was one question that I would ask here and now it would be about getting the right information to take that first step. I'm really exited and glad I joined this forum, I can tell I'm in the right place for the right reasons
