Taking the course is the first step in becoming a certified pyro. My understanding of the process is you do the course then once complete you can apply to become a display assistant. Once you have sign offs from 3 shows you worked on as an assistant you can become a Display supervisor. I am not sure what else is involved in becoming Display supervisor, like if there is any additional course or tests you need to take first. I am going to do the first course in a couple weeks so I should know more then. You can find more info here: www.nrcan.gc.ca/explosives/fireworks/9885

I was wondering if anyone can give some info on the differences between the Display Fireworks certification and the Pyrotechnic certification. I was thinking that Pyrotechnic is more for indoor and close proxmitiy but I read this on the main page on Natural Resources website and now I am wondering if I will need both certifications:
Display Fireworks are high-hazard firework articles designed for use by professionals. These articles include items such as aerial shells, cakes, roman candles, waterfalls, lances and wheels.
Pyrotechnic Special Effects are high-hazard pyrotechnics articles designed for use by professionals. These articles include items such as gerbs, mines, comets and crossettes. This class also includes special purpose pyrotechnics manufactured live stage and the film and television industry.
I see mines, comets and crossettes are listed under Pyrotechnic Special Effects, so I guess I need this as well as Display Fireworks license to use these items, or are they referring to some other types of effects?

Welcome to the forum, glad to have you join. try PMing exarmyat about display courses in your area, I think he is planning on putting on on in Ottawa Valley if that is anywhere near you. He mentioned it here canadianpyro.ca/thread/137/display-courses-canada

welcome, and glad to see someone join outside of Canada. Unfortunately we are also pretty limited on when we can have fireworks, but it varies from city to city it seems. My city we have 2 days we are allowed to light off fireworks. There is a pretty cool documentary on Fallas from Discovery Channel I watched if anyone is interested to learn more - www.youtube.com/watch?v=B03XuS7l68ICan't wait to get home from work to check out some of your videos

I saw the show last night. It's just a little 5 min show with mostly mines and comets, a few salutes and a few breaks which looked like they were maybe coming from cakes. They also had some flames and a few mines on top of the Princess Margret gate but the fireworks are going off from on top of the direct energy building so it's hard to see both at the same time. If anyone is interested I can upload a video but its not the best quality.

I just received an email from CNFA that members are eligible for a 10% discount from Cobra. If you are looking to buy a Cobra system be sure to join the CNFA first at www.nationalfireworks.ca/ then tell your Cobra sales rep you are a member of the CNFA to get your 10% discount.

I am in for sure. Either working alone, as a team leader, or just on someones team I don't care as long as I get to light off some fireworks. I think the size of the teams would depend on how much product we have and how long we have to setup. If we have all day to setup we could probably work alone and help each other out if needed, but if we only have a few hrs to setup we will need more people.
The location, date and cost to use needs to be solidified before some people may commit to attending. I said I am in for sure but really if I have to put up all the money for the fireworks I am not so sure anymore. Lumadue also brought up certification. If it's required this could cause some people that want to participate to not be able to.

Thanks for the info, that's a nice big break for a $4 tube item, gotta get some of those next year.
Do you cut down the fuse right to where it goes in the first tube and then attach the talon to the last little nub of fuse?

I think peoples choice would be a good idea, that way if K&H does sponsor then Lumadue can still participate without worrying about conflict of interest.
2 nights seems like a good idea. 40-60 mins of fireworks in one night is too much IMO, crowd will be getting bored by the end. On the other hand, depending on the location though it may be an issue for some to travel 2 days and they may need to stay in a hotel to be there both days.

Nice job. timing was really good too especially considering you are using talons. Would love to see what you can do with some ematches. Around 4:45 you have some big willow effect, what is that? The willow for sure is the Vulcan Golden rain willow. Had several in my show as well. Thanks that's what I figured it was, just wanted to confirm. Those are really nice.

Any leads on location yet? We could look at busker fest as they seem to have them all over the place throughout the summer.
Location and Sponsors need to be figured out first, then the other rules could be made based on what we have to work with. Is K&H going to supply all/some of the product if we get a location together? If the works are free we could use the entry fee to go towards insurance and other costs if we can't find any more sponsors.

The more you bring it up the more I agree anyone participating should have taken the Display Course and have a Display Assistant Certification. Anyone who wants to participate should have plenty of time to get that done, and if you are on this forum it's probably something you want to do anyways. For budget, whatever the final $ value is, I agree it needs to be the same for each team so everything is fair. Ideally the sponsor would give us a good enough budget, or give us access to wholesale/discounted prices so $500 would go a lot further. I am not sure about others but I don't see myself putting up more than 100-200 dollars for this, and I would prefer to not have to put up anything and have a sponsor pay for product. Here are some of the rules for the spirit of 76 amateur competition, we could use these to get some ideas and alter them as needed (http://www.76fireworks.com/_lib/files/Official_Rules_2.pdf) - Put together a show using product in stock at Spirit of '76 in Columbia, MO
- Design your 4-7 minute show
- Designers may use up to 30 different items
- Designers may use up to $1200 worth of fireworks (at Gold piece price)
- The show must be electronically fired - no hand lighting will be allowed. Must limit firing system to 8 Cobra modules.
- Electronic match (or "e-match") will be provided if needed but will be limited to 500.
- Fireworks may not be altered in any way EXCEPT for the use of e-match as the initial source of ignition. Contestants
are not allowed to alter internal fusing in any way, nor may they take actions whose purpose is to change the speed of the
piece, alter the firing pattern, or halt firing prematurely.

Good points, I think everyone participating could at least become a display assistant to ease the problems with insurance, that should not be too big of an issue. I think this would be a good motivator for anyone who has no certifications to go get some (myself included)
We could build teams with a display supervisor leading each team, I think we have at least 3-4 around here.

There is the Canadian Pyrotechnic Council www.cpcinfo.ca/ but they seem more on the industry side and only businesses are members from what I can see, not individuals. I was hoping to keep this amateur as I thought the point of this was for us to all get together and shoot pyro, but if you can get all the distributors to put on a 1.3 show that would be better to watch. I was thinking it would be great if one company donates some product, or gives us a discount on product to use, then we could say that everything we used in these shows can be bought from "company" by anyone over 18. If we did this it would probably be better to have this event before Victoria day, so that the sponsor gets a chance to sell product. Kinda like the product demos they always have in the USA.

Nice! Now I really want to come see your next show, when is it? Around 5 sec in I see a fanned comet cake going off, is that do or die? Did you hand light all this or do you have a firing system?

Oh nice forget my system then. Do you have the scripted cobra remotes? I would love to get to try that out. I wanted to get a cobra so bad but with just shooting a show or 2 with an average budget of $150-$200 I just could not justify it.

Sweet let me know if there is anything I can do to help. I can bring a my 32 queue firing system for us to use, and I have been thinking about getting some more modules. It has some limited scripting functionality that I have not tried yet because the software is pretty bad but they are working on some improvments. www.rfremotech.com/MB32Q.html

That would be great if we could arrange something like that, I was thinking just going out in the boonies but a sponsored event would be even better.
What kind of sponsor are you thinking about? I see a lot of shows around here are sponsored by banks and big corporations like Pizza Pizza. A fireworks company would be good as they could just donate the product and the cost would be less to them I imagine.

Wow do you have a pic of the total stash, would love to see that. I wish I could come out to see the show but Peterborough Speedway is about a 2 hour drive. I am still thinking about it. is $1200 just for the finale of the show or the whole show?
